Making Money from Home: Working Out Its Pros and Cons

To earn money to feed oneself, one will have to work. Traditionally, one has to leave his or her home for a good chunk of his or her waking hours in order to work. Nowadays, it’s no longer the rule for everyone who is looking to earn a living. Thanks to the Internet, people can now earn money from home, working on online jobs and businesses without having to leave their doorsteps.

Many see working from one’s own house as an ideal alternative to any other form of work. One should keep in mind, however, that jobs done from home aren’t exactly the epitome of perfection. Home-based jobs, regardless of the nature, have plenty of disadvantages, often as much as there are benefits to them. Below are such benefits and drawbacks that are rather common to most home-based jobs.

The Pros of Home Working

One of the primary benefits of working from home is the fact that it allows you to save some big money. This is because working at home doesn’t mean going places just to make money. This eliminates the expenses that you’d otherwise put on gas if you have a car or fares for a bus or a cab. Not only that, but working from your home enables you to avoid all the miscellaneous expenses associated with doing your job in a different workplace. Such includes work uniforms which aren’t exactly cheap for all we know.

You’ll also be able to deal with your household responsibilities even as you work. Home-based work schedules can be flexible, allowing home-based workers in one way or another to take breaks whenever necessary. These breaks can be spent on doing the needed household activities. As such, it is very easy to say that home-based jobs are suitable for homebodies like housewives, mothers, and single parents.

Furthermore, many home-based jobs pay at rates similar to many traditional jobs. Add to this the fact that you get to spend less when you are working from home than doing likewise elsewhere, and you get to earn an optimum salary.

The Cons

A drawback that’s very common to most home-based jobs is the feeling of isolation that working from home can impose on the home-based worker. This is thanks in a big part to the fact that you are basically alone. Your client is always away and will only contact you when needed, and you have non-existent colleagues. Having little to no chance to communicate with other people besides your family can lead to a degraded social life.

In addition, you don’t get benefits from your employer. This is because you are nothing more than an independent contractor and aren’t a real part of the company. As such, you’ll be the one responsible for your healthcare, social security, and other worker benefits.

These pros and cons of home-based jobs are just a few of the many that you should know if you aim to make money from home. Working online from the comforts of your home certainly is a great option, but is not without any single flaw.

3 Major Disadvantages of Working at Home

Working these days don’t always mean leaving your house and go to some workplace to do your job. Nowadays, anyone can opt to sign up for work that they can do from home. Working at home is certainly appealing and has so many advantages as we have discussed in the previous article. However, people should know that it also has its own set of disadvantages that may render it rather unfavorable to certain folks. Here are the main drawbacks of home-based jobs that anyone who are planning to work from home should first consider:

There are Many Distractions

When you work from home, don’t expect that you’ll always be able to do your job properly. There will always be distractions that you’ll need to overcome or be forced to entertain when you work at home. This is true most especially when there are family members and relatives at home. If you find yourself near your young ones for instance, you’ll be forced to divide your attention between your work and watching over them as a responsible adult.

Now of course, as you work from home, you’ll get visitors every now and then, ranging from traveling salesmen to various acquaintances. Most of these people will think that you are available for business since you are at home and that your work is nothing to worry about. You can always kindly tell them off though, but not until you’ve already been distracted in the middle of your work just to meet them at the front gate.

You Are Basically Working Alone

When you are working at home, you are basically working alone. Some people see this as a good thing while others see it as something unfavorable. Regardless of how you see working as a lone home-based worker, however, it’s a fact that being alone at work has some drawbacks.

First off, it takes away an opportunity to make acquaintances and socialize with other people, as you are stuck at home for most of your waking hours. You have nobody else around you besides your family, whom you are already comfortable interacting with. Also, you only have to solve problems on your own, with a little help from the Internet. This is far less efficient than cooperating with some co-workers to find a solution. In addition to this, working from home alone can bring about a gloomy and rather uncompetitive atmosphere.

You Don’t Get Benefits

You are basically self-employed when you work from home, unless you belong to some sort of decentralized company. As such, you’ll get to shoulder all the benefits that a company is supposed to provide for you, like health to vehicle insurance. This can be quite expensive for you, as most home-based work is known to not pay as much as any conventional job.

Without a doubt, working at home is a good alternative to conventional work. However, it should also be noted that it’s not a perfect one, given that it also have disadvantages just like everything else.
